How to Style your Garden Room this Christmas

How to Style your Garden Room this Christmas

The festive season is well and truly here. The Christmas calendars have been opened, Santa letters sent, cakes baked and presents bought.

The main event is just around the corner, but it’s not too late to transform your garden room into a truly magical space this season. So here are our top tips – from designing a wintery wonderland Harrods would be proud of to creating just the right atmosphere to awaken all the senses.

Create a Winter Wonderland

Full wall-length tapestries displaying wintery photographic scenes work a treat in a garden room, and they’re pretty inexpensive (retailing from £14 at Light in The Box).  Just remember to order one in plenty of time, as it’ll need ironing before being displayed.

To add to the winter scene, you could sprinkle some fake snow. Amazon sells 1-litre cannons of biodegradable snow confetti – it just depends on if you mind clearing up afterwards. Trust us, it’s a lot easier on smooth laminate flooring than it is carpet!

Theme your Scene

If you have the budget and the space, it’s a great idea to carry your garden room Christmas theme outdoors. There are some fabulous, illuminated deer, penguins, trees, giant presents and baubles that look super stylish.

As a tip, it’s a good idea to choose the same coloured lighting across all their ornaments, as the owners of this stunning Affinity Garden Room have done.

We love how the reindeer look startled as you approach the spot-lit garden room. Using trees of different heights also works well as a nod to a forest theme.

Illuminate Your Garden Room with Fairy lights

Fairy lights are one of the most popular ‘go-to’ Christmas decorations. You can add them to a Christmas tree, as a keyline around your windows and doors, or drape your garden room with a fully-lit curtain.

You could also accent surrounding trees and shrubs with fairy lights to add a Christmassy twinkle to the view from your garden room.

Christmas Garden Room Window Decals

Nothing says Christmas like crisp white snowflakes. You only need to walk along Carnaby Street in London to see the incredible display of window silhouettes that instantly transform glass into a work of art.

There are quite literally hundreds of decals (window motifs) to choose from on Etsy, NotOnTheHighStreet and Amazon. We adore this one by Scrappy Doodles UK for just £18 – you can even select from 20 different colours.

What’s clever about these snowy decals is that you can place each element anywhere you wish – on windows, smooth walls and mirrors (perfect for your garden room).

Play a Virtual Fire

In the absence of a log-burning fire, a great way to mimic one in your garden room is to turn your monitor or TV into a virtual fireplace. YouTube has hundreds of fires you can choose from – you’ll be spoilt for choice. We love the sound effects, too. There’s nothing more satisfying than hearing the hiss, crunch and crackle of an open fire.

Introduce the Scent of Christmas

When we think of Christmas, the aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, orange, pine needles and even firewood come to mind. To create an authentic Christmas, feel, you could burn some candles (just being mindful to keep them out of reach and always in sight). The best candles to use in a garden room are natural soy or olive wax, as they’re paraffin free and create no soot (unlike conventional candles). If you’re looking for a natural candle, Essex-based Clean Candles offer a fantastic selection of olive wax candles. The infusion of cedarwood, cinnamon bark, French lavender and ylang-ylang sounds amazing.

If you’re too worried about candles, though, you could use a festive scented oil plug-in or even make your own potpourri!

Make your Garden Room Cosy

After tucking into a sumptuous roast dinner, it’s great to sit back and relax.

To make your garden room ultra-cosy and ideal for playing board games, you could place a low-level picnic bench surrounded by floor cushions, as pictured below. It works a treat at Christmas and can also be used outside during the summer.
