Do I need planning permission for a garden building?

This is one of the most frequently-asked questions that we get asked.

Generally you DO NOT need planning permission for any of our garden buildings. Despite our SMART garden studios having a 25-year design life, they are not considered in the eyes of the law as permanent fixtures. This is because they do not require their own foundations.

Also because each of our garden buildings are built in sections and have a height of less than 2.5m. This keeps our products within the October 2008 planning guidelines.

There are, however, a few exceptions when we recommend that you do seek planning permission:

  • The Garden Office is being assembled in a conservation area
  • The building will occupy more than 50% of your garden
  • The building will be located between your home and a highway

If you would like to see our garden studios which do not require planning permission, please head over to see our ranges or request a copy of our  free catalogue which will be posted to you.

If you still need more information please feel free to call us 0800 242 5559 to discuss your own circumstances and we’ll provide you with all the advice you need.
